How to Prepare

Get Ready for Smooth.

Waxing and Sugaring can be intimidating for first timers, but the dedicated team at Waxalon promises you are in the right hands. We are leaders in Toronto hair removal services and are committed to providing our clients with the best experience possible. We take care of you before and after your treatment.

We know that every client is different and wants different results. That’s why our hair and skin experts take the time to consult with each client that walks through our door. By getting to know you better, we are able to determine the most optimal treatment for you. Hair-removal goals, skin type, hair thickness, budget and lifestyle are all elements we take into consideration. Once we find the right hair removal solution, it’s time to get excited for your treatment and your soon-to-be silky skin! Prior to your appointment, take the time to read through our PRE and POST waxing tips to achieve and maintain perfect results.

PRE Wax

  • Your hair needs to be long enough for waxing to be effective. We won’t service clients without hair ¼ inch long – we don’t want to waste your time or money! A great way to gage if your hair is ready for waxing is making sure it is at least half the length of your pinky nail. Longer is always better, so embrace the extra fuzz before your treatment with us. 2 to 4 weeks is the average time it takes for hair to reach the stage ideal for waxing.
  • Clients are required to exfoliate the skin area 24 hours prior to your appointment to create an optimal waxing surface.
  • Refrain from drinking 48 hours before your appointment. Alcohol remains in your bloodstream for up 48 hours, resulting in a higher sensitivity to pain. If you do not care and have high pain tolerance, we understand, and it is up to you!
  • For our clients who love the year-round summer glow, you must avoid using any tanning beds for at least 24 hours before your session. Also do not use any tanning oils, lotions, creams or exfoliants on the day of your wax – our team loves you with and without freshly sun-kissed skin!
  • For our clients who are sensitive to pain, we recommend taking an Ibuprofen about half an hour prior to your appointment (only if your doctor approves). Also, avoid any caffeinated drinks as our experts know this will help relax your nervous system and make for a session with less discomfort.
  • For ladies, we recommend scheduling your session 2 weeks prior or post your menstrual cycle as this will also result in a less sensitive waxing appointment. Waxing is 100% safe during your moon cycle, so if you feel up to it, we will gladly work around it; just be sure to wear a tampon.
  • We can suggest products that will help take the edge off your wax! Simply mention that you’re interested in a numbing cream upon booking your appointment.
  • For any facial waxing appointments, stop using acne medication and products 7 days before. If these sensitized areas are waxed it is much more likely to result in scabbing or tearing of the skin. The same goes for anti-wrinkle products. If you have any questions simply contact us and we’ll give you the right advice.
Our experts have provided a list below of products to avoid prior to your waxing appointment.
  • Bleaching creams
  • ProActive
  • Benzol Peroxide
  • Differin
  • Retin A
  • Obagi
  • AHA’s (Alpha
  • Hydroxyl Acids)
  • BHA’s (Beta
  • Hydroxyl Acids)
  • Retinol based
  • products
  • Anti-biotics
  • Acne medications
  • Renova

These products need to be stopped at least 7 days before your waxing appointment as they sensitize and dry-out the skin. This can easily result in tearing and scarring of the skin during a session.

To those experiencing a skin flare-up from a sunburn, water retention, anti-biotic prescription or pregnancy should generally avoid booking a waxing appointment – as all of these increase the chance of skin lifting/tearing. If you are experiencing a sensitivity occurrence but still feel confident, then just let us know and we will do our best to work around it.

*NOTE: The use of Accutane must be stopped for at least a YEAR prior to a waxing session at Waxalon.

POST Wax

  • Redness is common, so don’t worry about it! You can expect the area to be red and feeling tender anywhere from right after your session for up to 48 hours post-session.
  • After 48 hours you must exfoliate the waxed area, we recommend a natural or fragrance-free product.
  • Plan a lose-fitting wardrobe for the first day or two after your appointment to increase comfortability.
  • Restrain from rubbing, touching or playing with your freshly waxed skin. It is tempting to want to feel how smooth your freshly waxed skin is, but bacteria is commonly found on your fingertips. You can dramatically increase the risk for infection and breakouts by touching your freshly waxed skin.
  • We know we made you avoid tanning beds and products before your session, but the same goes for after your wax! Wait at least 24-48 hours before exposing the waxed area to tanning beds, tanning products or sunlight. You will thank us later and avoid having your precious skin easily burned.
  • It may be tough for our hot yogis, gym-goers and active clients; but avoid breaking a sweat and working out for at least a day after your appointment. There is a serious chance of causing clogged pores, skin irritation and white heads from the bacteria found in your sweat. If you accidently find yourself in a sweaty scenario, shower ASAP and pat the area dry.
  • Pools, hot tubs and baths need to be put off until the skin recuperates. Even chlorine and natural saltwater pools can cause irritation and infections.
  • A few bumps and pimples are expected for first-time clients. As you continue getting that area of skin waxed, the hair follicles will get used to the process and will be less sensitive – and more importantly, your hair will grow back thinner!
  • Experiencing a lot of white pimples? Use a natural exfoliant gently every day until you notice the area clearing up.
  • Enjoy your new smooth, silky and flawless skin! Remember, the more times you choose our waxing services over shaving, the thinner your hair will grow back, and the less upkeep you will need!

The first 24 hours after your appointment are the most important. By reading and adhering to the advice listed above, we ensure a flawless end result. Trust us, it’s better to be safe and smooth than infected and sorry.

FAQs

Take an “Ibuprofen” 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment or inquire about our numbing products.

The average re-growth cycle is around 3-4 weeks. We recommend booking a wax every 4 weeks to maintain optimal results.

Redness is common from right after your wax up until 24 hours post appointment. For newcomers or those with thicker hair it is normal to experience more redness or irritation than usual. Once your follicles and skin get more used to the process, the amount of redness will diminish. If you are concerned, ask one of our experts for a product to reduce post-wax irritation.

There are generally two potential side effects.

Light bleeding may occur and usually only to first-time clients. This is because it is the hair follicles first time being removed from the root and there may be some resistance for it to come out. This is rare and doesn’t usually happen.

Secondly, infection is a potential risk. As waxing ultimately creates numerous tiny openings in the skin for a short amount of time, there is a risk of bacteria or dirt entering and causing an infection. This is only if clients do not follow proper post-wax care or hygiene. By taking care of the freshly waxed area and utilizing post-wax product, there is a small chance of getting any sort of infection. Talk to us before or during your appointment if you are prone to infections and we can definitely give you the best advice.

This highly depends on the client. Some women have consistently been getting waxes done throughout the entire duration of their pregnancy and are used to the process. However, we do not recommend our hair removal services for women who are far along and new to hair removal. Hormone fluctuation results in faster and thicker hair growth, more sensitivity and discomfort. This is especially relevant for any bikini or Brazilian waxes. If you plan to get sugaring or waxing done during pregnancy our experts recommend getting it done in the first or second trimester and repeating per preference from there. We suggest investing in sugaring services during this time as they are much gentler and contain natural and hypoallergenic formulas.

We will only offer our Brazilian services for female clients who are above the age of 14 and have begun their menstrual cycle. On top of this requirement, a parent or guardian must be in attendance with the client and have a copy of the clients ID.

Please allow a minimum of 12 hours for pores to begin closing prior to engaging with any intimacy or hot tubs.

No. The hair will actually grow back lighter and softer every time you wax. It usually takes at least 3 procedures to really notice a change in how fast your hair grows back. But you can notice your hair coming in softer after the first wax.

We suggest that you wait at least 24 hours before you lay out in the sun or in a tanning bed. As for a spray tan, we suggest you wait a few hours for your skin to re-acclimate after the wax.
